Description of project:
The project will contribute to the development of the health workforce of Papua New Guinea. Training will be provided to staff in the National Department of Health and University of Papua New Guinea in both medical education and training specialists. The project area included Port Moresby and a number of Provinces. Australian advisers with relevant technical skills and experience to contribute to training health personnel in PNG (Approximately 5 long-term advisers and 350 short-term advisers); Arrange training attachments in Australia, Fiji and PNG relevant to the particular needs of each trainee (over 50 scholarships and 200short -term training attachments); Organise appropriate in-service training for people in the health sector to improve their knowledge, skills and efficiency in all aspects of their work (over 50 workshops); Develop rolling annual HRD plans for medicine, health sciences and post basic nursing; infrastructure upgrades and curriculum development.
Services provided:
UNSW IP is providing the project management, financial management and financing of the total project on behalf of the consortium. This includes the setup of a Port Moresby project office with locally engaged staff and administrative systems. Since the project begun over 300 consultants have mobilised and over 50 counterpart traineeships and scholarships have been conducted. 3 long term staff were supported in the field.
